Another Camp Story

Hey, it's Scout Girl again. I'm having a real tough semester, so forgive me if you're one of the nice people who asked for more instalments of my summer camp misadventures.

I'm going to tell you about the night I was kidnapped by a group of 16 year-olds. At the summer camp were I worked as a riding instructor, there is a place called Big Timber Lake way up in the mountains. The camp counsellors, usually college guys, got Thursday night off every week. Sometimes I would take them on horseback up to Big Timber Lake and we'd cook out on a camp fire and just chill for a while away from the little brats (and big brats, too).

O.K., so this one time when we came back down the mountain it was almost dark out. There were only a few counsellors, so I volunteered to untack the horses myself, and the counsellors went down to the nightly camp fire.

All of a sudden, these four 16 year-old boys showed up and started asking me to take them up to Big Timber. They had heard from the counsellors how beautiful it was and how much fun it was to ride up there. When I refused, they said they'd just kidnap me and make me take them up these. They produced some rope, grabbed me by the arms and held me while one of them tied my hands behind my back.

"When you get us up there, we'll let you go", one of them told me.

I twisted my wrists trying to get my hands free, but they'd tied me pretty good.

"Listen", I said. "You're going to get in big trouble for this. Let me go now and I'll forget all about it."

"We'll untie you if you promise to take us to Big Timber."

"No way. You'll get in trouble and I'll get in trouble. Now take the ropes off me."

They told me that if I wouldn't go voluntarily, they'd tie me onto a horse. That's what they did. Despite me kicking and trying to bite them, they got me up on an old lesson horse named Rikki that was already saddled up from the trip with the counsellors. They told me they'd untie me when we got to the lake.

"You're crazy! I can't ride a horse with my hands tied behind me!"

"Well, then," said this boy named Jeremy, "you'd better be careful and not struggle."

"Look, you can't do this to me. If this horse spooks in the dark I could get hurt really bad."

Their solution was to wrap rope around my arms and chest and tie one end to the saddle horn. Like that was safe or something.

Even though I kept complaining, they hooked a lead rope to Rikki's bridle and started up the path to Big Timber. I was on the second of five horses, with Jeremy holding the lead rope.

I struggled to get my hands loose for a while longer, but it was no use.

"Come on, let me loose. I feel like Rikki's going to take off through the trees any second. Anyway, if you let me go, I'll get us up there a lost faster."

That didn't do any good, so I said something like, "O.K. I'll tell you how to get Big Timber, but you have to promise to let me loose as soon as we get there."

They agreed. So, there I was with my hands bound behind me bouncing up a narrow mountain trail. It takes almost an hour to get there during daylight, and without me being tied up. I was wearing a leather jacket over a T-shirt, and leather chaps over my jeans. But, when the sun goes down that high up, it gets pretty cold.

When we finally arrived, they untied the rope around my chest, but pulled me down off Rikki with my hands still tied. I reminded them that they promised to untie me. But, they said they were afraid if they let me go, I'd run off and leave them stuck up on the mountain in the dark. I hadn't thought of that, but it suddenly seemed like a good idea.

"I'm not going to try to get down the mountain by myself," I told them. "Besides, I'm going to be in enough trouble for letting you take me up here."

I also kept complaining that my arms ached and the ropes were making my hands numb. Eventually, it worked and they untied me. So, I waited for a moment when I could jump on Rikki and ride off. I wouldn't really leave them alone there, but I thought it would be fun to scare them all a little bit.

The city guys are so dumb. They were trying to light a campfire by throwing matches on a pile a wood. So, while they were occupying themselves with that, I sneaked back around to the trees where the horses were tied. I had just reached them when some of the horses started stomping and whinnying (spelling?). By the time I had got my first foot in the stirrup, the boys were on me. They dragged me back into the clearing near the lake shore and pushed me over a big log and tied my hands behind me again. Then the sat me on a stump near where they were trying to start a fire and tied my feet together.

Even though I was in all that leather, I was getting cold, so I told them how to make a campfire.

"How long are you planning to stay up here?" They didn't seem to think things through that much and couldn't answer.

"For a while," was the best they could come up with.

I have to admit I was little bit. . . ah, concern let's say, about being tied up hand and foot with four strange boys in the middle of nowhere. They seemed harmless enough, but you can never tell. Earlier in the week, there is something called "Knock-About Night", where there are no planned activities, but the counsellors build a bonfire (instead of just a campfire) and there are games for the littler kids. It always ends up with things like water balloon fights, and some kids are always thrown into the lake. It was also the night where some group of kids, usually ten or eleven year-olds, grabbed me and tied me to the flagpole in the middle of camp. It happens almost every week. This week, it was this group of boys who now were kidnapping me who pushed the younger boys out of the way and let me loose. So, I tried not to think any negative thoughts.

Anyway, they said they couldn't trust me, and they kept me tied while we sat around the campfire they eventually got going. They also kept my hands tied all the way back down to camp. I kept begging them to tie my hands in front, but they were afraid I try some other trick on them. I guess that was not an unrealistic fear. In any case, by my estimate, my hands were tied behind me for at least four hours. They didn't let me go until they pulled me off Rikki when we got back to the barn.

Secrets are hard to keep in a summer camp. But, if my boss did hear about this night, he never said anything to me.
