When I was 15. I became the cause of the Gina -Steffi wars. Being fought over by two girls might sound fun, but in my case it quickly became a major pain in the butt.

When Steffi, my German immigrant girlfriend, got back from her vacation, she saw how I was spending a fair amount of time with Gina, a new kid who came from central Chicago, and saw her position as the Alpha Girl in my life threatened. She had spent a good deal of time getting me interested in various aspects of high culture with some success. She (and her Mom) got me interested in Classical Music and chess. I think she saw all the work she put in civilizing an American boyfriend going down the drain.

Actually Gina and I were just friends. We had common interests and a similiar cynical outlook at things. Oh, I thought Gina was attractive but never thought of her a
replacement for Steffi. I told Gina I was already taken in that regard a couple days after I met her. She accepted that. But Steffi found the concept hard to accept.

Aside from that their personalities guaranteed a clash. Steffi was very reserved toward people until she knew them and decided whether they were worth knowing better. She came off a as snob at times which was a shame because she wasn't. Money, status or race were not very important in her judgments. But she could come off as cold in the early stages of an acquaintance. And any appearance of snobbishness was a red flag to Gina who had the classic Blue collar mistrust of anyone putting on airs. And Steffi was not prepared for Gina's outspoken attitude toward everyone and anything.

Ironically enough, both Gina and Steffi's attitudes were defenses in a strange enviorment. After five years, Steffi still found America strange in many ways. And Gina found Surburban California a different kettle of fish than an ethnic neighborhood in the Windy City. Be that as it may, they clashed from the first meeting.

I am going to spare you a detailed account of the first sparks in their first few meetings. There was no yelling , no open hostilities, just dirty looks and some mildly catty remarks. The fun really begun the first time Gina and Steffi were on opposite sides in our military maneuvers.

I now realize I should have charged the other kids a fee for these games; a lot of people are making bucks off of the same type games in the various Paintball gun sites in the US. And many of the people paying money aren't teens but professional people in their thirties and forties. But it was the same type of game. On the day I'm writing about Gina was on the side opposite Steffi and Me.

The Commander of Gina's side was my younger sister Chris who wanted to command. To put it mildly Chris was not a military genius..She sent Private Gina out to the large semiwild park where our games were held as a scout. Remember Gina was from Chicago and not used to the great outdoors. She had not learned such basics as not stepping on twigs to avoid alerting the enemy. Gina was still a green private. As a result Steffi and I and our group heard Gina coming a mile away.

When she stepped into the clearing we jumped out with super soakers at the ready. I was about to pull the trigger when Steffi jumped ahead, grabbed the supersoaker from Gina's surprised hands (Gina acquired one week after she moved out to California), and said "No! She is our Prisoner!" Gina, still surprised by the ambush just put up her hands. (The rules had been explained to her) Steffi pulled out a piece of rope from her backpack (standard equipment) and begun tying Gina's hands together behind her back, palm to palm. (SOP for taking prisoners in our games.) Steffi was usually gentle in doing this but not this time.

Steffi was pulling the ropes much tighter then she usually did. Gina gave an ouch and I was about to tell Steffi to ease up, this was just a game and the first rule was no one really got hurt, but before I could Gina gave another ouch and then said "Not so Tight, Kraut!"

I thought "Oh, Shit". If there was one way to get Steffi really mad it was any slight on her German background. And any WWII or Nazi remarks were really verboten. (Excuse the pun, Jonah,) And I knew Steffi had seen enough WWII films on TV to know this was a war movie term of insult for a German . I saw her stiffen up, put the final knot in, then take out a strip of Duct Tape and gag Gina with it.

"Now we will take her to my house to keep her as a prisoner" Steffi said. Steffi lived on street that ended in a dead end against the border of the park. Her house was two houses down from the dead end. We formed a group with Gina in the middle so casual observers could not see her clearly and walked to the dead end, around the car barrier there, and, walking very fast got to a side gate to Steffi's back yard. Steffi's dad and mom were at work so we walked up to her backporch. There were two or three large imitation redwood armchairs there-the kind that are popular as outdoor furnishings in California. We seated Gina in one of them.

I checked the ropes that bound Gina's wrists and saw the ropes were tighter then usual and I decided to loosen them a little. But before I could untie them Steffi was
already doing it. She was still mad but realized there were limits - and actually causing pain was one of them. And she had already thought of a safer way to get back at Gina for her politically incorrect remark without really causing Gina pain her which even in anger Steffi did not really want to do.

As soon as Gina hands were untied Steffi had grabbed a roll of duct tape and had pulled Gina's left wrist down to the left arm of the chair and securely taped it there and repeated it with her right wrist to the right arm of the arm chair. Steffi them wound the tape a few times around Gina's body further taping her to the chair. She them taped Gina's left foot to the left leg of the chair and the right ankle to right chair leg. As a final touch she taped Gina's elbows to the chair. If you've seen Bridget Fonda in Single White Female you've seen the way Gina was taped to the chair.

We left a eight year old to stand guard. I bent over and asked Gina if she was OK. Gina just nodded. She prided her self on being tough. And to be honest this is probably the most comfortable position to be tied in-it's just like you were sitting watching television. Steffi then checked the tape gag to be sure it was secure.
We then returned to the park and our scout reporting the other side approaching. We set up a ambush and Chris's team was toast. When the streams of water were over Chris's side was wiped out. We then retuned to Steffi's backyard. Gina had been taped to the chair for about 20 minutes.

I thought that Gina would be untaped from the chair and that would be the end but it wasn't. Steffi walked over to Gina a said "You called me a Kraut. You should not have done that. You should not insult a person because of their background". Steffi was using her textbook perfect English when always stood out like a sore thumb among slangy American kids.

"I will think that your temper got the best of you. But I have a way to cool down your Hot Italian temper"(Gina was an 3rd generation Italian American). Steffi was now being a bit of a hypocrite her self by using an stereotype but aren't we are a little hypocritical now and then? Even American Presidents are not immune.

Steffi then went inside the house. Gina begun to mmpph. She was getting nervous. But I felt Steffi had a point. Gina had gone too far in calling her a Kraut. And I could always intervene if I felt Steffi's punishment was too stiff.

Steffi came out about two minutes later with a plastic bucket full of water. I them remembered how my Cousin Cindy was punished for a transgression the summer before by execution by a supersoaker firing squad. Steffi had decided on a variation on this for Gina. Steffi said "This should cool you off, Gina". And Steffi proceeded to soak Gina.

Steffi did not just dump the water on Gina all at once. But, holding the bucket at an angle, she dribbled the water on Gina head. When Steffi was satisfied that Gina's head was completely soaked she moved the bucket down and begun to pour water on Gina's sweatshirt until it was inundated, and then soaked her lap with the rest of the water. Gina was dripping wet all over. She did some real mmmphing behind her gag. .As soon as Steffi was done soaking her she said "I hoped you learned a lesson , Fraulein (Gina's very Italian last name)". And then Steffi took off Gina's gag indicating the punishment was as an end.

I braced myself for a real outburst of temper but the only thing that came out was a request to be untied from the chair. Gina was untaped, took a towel that Steffi had brought out to dry herself and then told Steffi "I'm sorry I called you a Kraut. I should not have insulted your background. I should have called you a bitch".

"Oh Shit" I thought again. This was a declaration of war.

"I have an account to settle with you and we Italians like to settle our accounts. And I'm one fourth Sicilian which means I am really into revenge". Gina had mentioned a couple of times she had an account to settle with me because of the Houdini challenge. This was a line she borrowed from the Godfather films. In both films Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) states that the Corleone family is going to "settle its accounts" right before the Corleones slaughter their opponents. Gina had a sense of humor about being of Italian descent, and liked to use stereotypes against the person using it. One time (a couple of years later) when a kid called her a Mafia Bitch,
Gina said "Call me a bitch again and my cousins in Chicago will fly out and break a few legs". But when Gina told me she had an account to settle it was done in a playful manner.

This time it wasn't playful. Steffi just looked stunned. I knew that this was just a First Bull Run, a Pearl Harbor, the first battle of a war and I was caught in the middle. Gina walked out of the yard and I wondered what was the phone number for a UN peacekeeping force. It was going to be a full scale war. More front line reports later.
