Wayne and Jon were twins and, like most twins, they did everything together. They seemed to be joined at the hip.
What made them different from all of their schoolmates was their hair. It was snow white! They were what is termed ‘albinos’ with pure white hair and piercing sky blue eyes. These features made them appear like modern day Adonis boys to their female school friends but it also made them a target for their male counterparts. They were relentlessly teased and bullied through their school years but had, somehow, managed to survive.
With their unique looks, the boys could be mistaken for timid, bookish types more suited to pursuing an academic life sitting behind a desk. Nothing could be further from the truth as they were very adventurous and had developed a steely attitude as a result of the bullying.
Rather than sitting in front of a computer or reading a book, Wayne and Jon were much more content outdoors, roaming the countryside, camping under the stars and seeking out what nature could provide. They often rode their bikes through the woods not far from their home and even ventured miles away, looking for the best campsites.
The boys were now 16 years of age but, one day around three years ago, they came across an abandoned hut far from the main road and close by a river with pristine clear water. It took the boys almost an hour to cycle from home to the hut but it became virtually a second home to them as it was far enough away from civilisation for them to escape the normal day to day life – and the bullies.
They told their parents, Alec and Jane, of their find and their wish to frequent the hut on a regular basis. The parents gave them their blessing, though they had to take their phones with them in case of emergencies.
With a long weekend coming up, Alec advised the twins that he and Jane would be away for three days attending an adults camp which had been organised by his work. The idea was to get all the employees, and their partners, together in a social setting in order to boost production and employee relationships.
“Gee, that’s sounds great. Can we come too?†Wayne was always the cheeky one.
“Sorry, bud, it’s for adult onlyâ€
Wayne persisted “We’re almost adults, or mini adultsâ€
“Tell you what boys, why don’t you go to your hut and spend the weekend there? It’s warm enough for some swimming and you’ll like being under the stars instead of being cooped up here.â€
Jon cut off his twin by saying “Terrific idea, Dad. Much better than spending three days with a bunch of old fogeys.†“You can take my bro if you like.â€
Wayne admitted defeat. “That’s settled. We’ll pack our sleeping bags and enough tinned food to last until Tuesday.†“Actually I really cant wait to get back to the hut.â€
With all that settled the boys started to organise provisions for the journey. Sleeping bags, tins of spam, baked beans, peaches, half a dozen eggs, half a dozen bags of sweets, two cartons of milk and, of course, their PlayStations and their phones. Swimming trunks were also part of their ensemble.
Coming home early from school, Wayne and Jon set off on their adventure. Their backpacks were bulging with the provisions and each bike also carried a large box on the back. The boys were wearing jeans and sneakers, lone sleeved blue cotton shirts and caps. It would take them over an hour to reach their destination.
As the boys had frequented the hut multiple times over the past three years, they had set up a mini household at the base. At the hut there was a portable gas stove, tins of coffee, blankets and pillows for the two beds and a couple of large cans for carrying water from the nearby river.
In addition, unbeknown to their parents, was as stash of ropes, duct tapes and rags which the boys used for their infrequent tie-up games. The games were purely fun with one twin tying up the other in a primitive fashion – hands and feet – and sometimes adding a crude gag. The games lasted only a few minutes as the boys would rather be outside exploring than be inside and writhing around on the floor.
When they arrived at the hut, all of the provisions were dumped in a heap on the floor. Wayne was the first to react “Let’s go down to the river and have a dip before it gets too dark.†Jon agreed and, in a flash, they had discarded their clothing and changed into their swimming trunks – red for Jon and gold for Wayne, who was always the flashy type.
There was a ledge just over the riverbank, from where each boy waterbombed the other. The river was peaceful and the water calm but the boys were both good swimmers so there was little chance of either getting into difficulty. The boys spent well over an hour swimming, racing each other and generally skylarking when it was time to head back to the hut. They were barefoot and were careful not to step on any thorny undergrowth. It took them a good fifteen minutes to approach the hut and what they saw caught both boys by surprise.
There was a black sedan parked alongside the hut!
“What the f…†exclaimed Wayne. “Who’s taken over our hut?â€
“Be careful W (Jon’s pet name for his twin). They could be hunters or poachers up to no good. Maybe we better just wait to see if they go away.â€
“No way Jonny. It’ll be dark soon and I’m getting cold anyway. We’ve got to go inside and confront whoever it is. Tell them to p…. off.â€
“OK, you’re right. You go in first and I’ll be right behind you.â€
