Jasper Gets the Job (8)
Rob helped himself to a chair and brought it up against the table where Jasper was sitting.
Olsen continued, “. . . Ryder has been nominated to be elevated to Prefect but we needed to see if he would be of any use to us; you know, do whatever was needed of him, put himself out to be useful, all that sort of thing. That’s right, isn’t it Ryder?â€
Rob nodded enthusiastically, “Yes, Olsen.â€
“Then, if he passes the test, all he has to do is be a good boy until he starts his Lower Sixth. Yes?â€
Once more Rob nodded. “No problem, Olsen.â€
“And then it’s just a question of whether I recommend him to the staff. They always take our recommendations, beats them having to go to the trouble of building a team.â€
Both Fourth-Years knew that would involve Rob Ryder behaving himself and being of general use to the school for nearly another year first but, as long as he kept his Sports Captain role, that would be no problem for him at all.
“So, I expect you’re wondering what all that had to do with you?â€
Jasper looked from Ryder, to Olsen, to Farquharson and back again before risking a, “Well, Olsen, I am rather puzzled.â€
“Well, first of all, how did Ryder do? Did he cooperate? Did he try to escape?â€
“He was very cooperative. I was wondering why. That gag must have hurt him but he declined when I offered to remove it.â€
“Did you keep him safe?†Jasper supposed that he did. “But, even though you wanted to make things easier for him, you stuck to your task?â€
Jasper merely nodded. He really was not sure where this was going. Then Farquharson had an uncharacteristic burst of loquacity. “You see, Nibblett, there was another Prefect nomination as well.†Jasper looked puzzled. “How do you think you did?â€
There was a surprising outbreak of silence as the situation slowly dawned on Jasper.
“Alright, while you’re thinking, just get the oik ready to return to his dorm.†Olsen shifted himself and delivered the rope that had recently bound Jasper’s wrists into his hands. “Quinn, come here.†Quinn complied immediately. “You have a choice: either stand in the corner until Farquharson’s temper improves, . . .â€
“Oi!†No, Farquharson wasn’t really outraged. The Prefects grinned. Quinn did not.
“. . . or Nibblett here can tie you up and you get to go straight back to your dorm and persuade one of the other oiks to untie you.â€
Even having to take the chance on finding a friend who might untie him, there was no choice; Quinn had been standing in the corner for about an hour already and Farquharson was not known for his sunny disposition.
“Please Olsen, I want to go now.â€
Olsen didn’t seem satisfied with the answer. “And what else?†The Head Prefect needed to hear something else.
“Please, Olsen, I would like to return to my dorm now.†Quinn turned to face Jasper. “Please tie me up.â€
Jasper still didn’t feel quite justified in doing so but, in the light of the bizarre day that he had just experienced, he set to work. Remembering how he had been tied following his invitation to meet the Head Prefect, Jasper made his best shot at replicating some of what had been done to him.
Jasper found the middle of the rope and doubled it. Then he warned Quinn about what he was about to do. He moved the younger boy’s arms until his wrists sat above one another. Quinn held the pose while Jasper threaded the bight between his back and his arms before winding it three time round both wrists. He then pulled the rounds quite tight and tied the bight and the free ends in a sort of reef knot that did not slip while it was completed. Quinn flinched a bit. Farquharson looked on quite approvingly.
Having secured Quinn’s wrists, Jasper fed the free ends up under his armpits and back over the opposite shoulders before tying them in a reef knot behind his neck (I told you he was a Scout, didn’t I?), Quinn did squeak a bit as the ropes were twined behind his neck and pulled tight before the reef knot was completed but his wrists had only been pulled high enough up his back to leave his forearms only slightly above the horizontal. Jasper examined his work and thought that he probably shouldn’t waste the unused rope. He made a rather better job of the next stage than he had when he was securing Rob earlier. He simply fed the two free ends through the bight near Quinn’s wrists, gave the result a little tug without moving Quinn’s wrists noticeably, and tied the remaining rope off just above the bight.
Once again, Farquharson seemed impressed, “OK, Quinn, give us a twirl.†After the initial puzzlement, Quinn made a couple of slow spins.
Then one of the other prefects spoke for the first time. “And if you complain to mum and dad, I’ll tell them what an annoying little tic you really are.†As a Prefect, he had all the dirt on him.
No, it’s alright, Adam, honest.
=======
The immaculately attired prefect who just spoke was Quinn’s oldest brother. Perhaps an explanation is in order:
Adam Quinn (known to the Staff as Quinn Major) was the oldest of the brothers who attended the school.
Kane Quinn (Quinn Minor) was in the same year as Rob and Jasper, but he doesn’t really feature in this story.
Albert (Albie) Quinn (Quinn Minimus) was the rather sturdy First-Year boy wearing the old-fashioned striped pyjamas, was the prefects’ current guest and who had his arms bound behind him.
The long-established school provided a modern education but they did like to observe some rather arcane traditions such as the naming of siblings and the almost free hands the prefects enjoyed.
=======
Having spoken, Quinn Major ‘declared a personal interest’ and recused himself from dealing with his brother but Quinn Minimus knew he had all the dirt on him and could certainly get him into trouble with their parents when they got home. Albie wasn’t a bad kid compared to some; he was merely somewhat hyperactive and got onto minor scrapes easily, as he had that evening. He took his older brother’s threat seriously; he did not want to endure the parental lecture about the sacrifices they were making, how lucky he was to be going to such a splendid school, and the opportunities he was wasting, etc, etc, etc . . . . . . Neither did he want to do without access to his computer, his skateboard or his games consul for the entirety of the Summer Holidays.
“OK, Ryder, nuke Nibblett’s supper, it must be cold by now.†Jasper was glad of that, he did not want to do without any of his supper that night. As Ryder took the remaining chilli and rice over to the microwave, Olsen turned his attention to Quinn once more. “Open up Minimus.†Albie looked suspicious, he thought he had escaped having that blue ball inserted in his mouth and was surprised to be told, “Hold onto this,†as Olsen presented a card to his mouth. He dutifully clamped down on it. It was another of Olsen’s Head Prefect’s cards but this one had, “It is quite in order to release this oik IF he asks nicely.†Inscribed very neatly on the reverse.
“Ready Quinn?†Albie nodded enthusiastically. “I thought you deserved that card, so that your little mates will know that it is safe for them to untie you.â€
Quinn tried to say, “Thank you, Olsen,†through clenched teeth. He could obviously not see what had been written on it.
“Oh, and get yourself to Matron tomorrow, get that mess sorted out.†He scruffed Quinn’s mess of dark curls. The obvious clue to the relationship between the three brothers was their noticeably very dark hair but, whereas Albie had a veritable mess of dark curls, Adam had an immaculately groomed, rather old-fashioned haircut. Middle brother, Kane, was of the, “Get a grade-four at the start of each half-term and that should be safe until the next holiday,†persuasion.
“Right, push off and play in the fast lane!â€
“Thank you, Olsen.â€
Ryder even opened the door for him as Quinn made his getaway. He was going to have some difficulty using his thumbprint to access his dorm but that was all part of the fun, wasn’t it?
Jasper had many questions to ask, some of which were answered and, as soon as he had finished his chilli, a large chocolate cake was shared by all present. Rob was told to answer any questions Jasper might have over the weekend. Eventually Rob and Jasper were dismissed to their dorms and they made arrangements to meet up next morning. Jasper’s head was spinning and he didn’t get much sleep that night.
